Hummus Recipe

Hummus
(a transliteration of the Arabic: حمّص‎; also spelled hamos, homos, houmous, hommos, hommus, hummos or hummous; see romanization of Arabic) is a Levantine Arab[1] dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas, blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. It is a popular food throughout the Middle East and elsewhere.
definition found here on Wikipedia.

I do not like chickpeas.
I do not like store bought hummus. but...
I LOVE my homemade hummus derived from a recipe my sister gave me. So as picnic season is upon us, I thought you may like it too.

1 can chick peas, drained/rinsed
1/4 cup lemon juice
2 1/2 T olive oil
1/2 Tablespoon cumin
1tsp paprika
1/3 cup roasted red pepper (I use from a jar)
1/3 cup loosely packed fresh cilantro
(no need to cut throw in stems and all just remove the very bottom)

drain & rinse chickpeas. Place Chickpeas and lemon juice in food processor. process til mostly smooth. Add olive oil and spices process til mixed. Add red pepper and cilantro, process a final time. Serve with Pita Chips, fresh veggies, whatever you like.

variations: omit cilantro and red pepper add 1/2 cup olives and 2 tsp garlic powder.

i love hummus and i live off the stuff. i have a lot of food allergies so hummus with some tortilla chips is quite the treat for me. i make it all the time too. and you are soooo right, it is so much better when you make it yourself. i have never used cilantro in mine so i will have to try that next time. yum!!!

thanks for reading-I am a cilantro fanatic I was actually thinking about just chomping a handful of it when I was making this today. Both of my children had/have food allergies. That can be SO hard. if you avoid milk I probably have lots of good recipes for you:)

Yummy! I love Hummus but I have never made it. We always get the roasted pepper variety .... should I....could I....make my own? I just might try! Thanks :-)

Thanks for commenting Rosie:) yes, you should try, it's much cheaper to make your own, probably healthier too:)
